Voter Services

This Team has a dual focus: providing voter registration and assistance, and voter education (forums, Vote411)/turnout. We assist with voter registration, conduct candidate forums, and collaborate with youth organizations such as the Appleton Area School District student marketing team. Working individually from our computers, we gather and create Vote411 information. Training is provided. Meetings are usually held on the fourth Monday of every month. Additional time commitments depend on projects and activities individuals choose to work on as they arise. This committee is more active around election cycles.

Action

Advocacy is also known as “Action” in the League of Women Voters. We believe “government of the people” means letting your voice be heard on issues of importance — taking action beyond Election Day. Action takes many forms: contacting elected representatives, rallying around issues, writing letters to the editor, asking questions at town hall forums, speaking at public meetings. League encourages all our members and all citizens to take action on every issue that matters in their lives — keeping our democracy strong.

Before the League takes action as an organization, we first research, study, discuss, and reach consensus on an issue. This process creates “support positions” which guide our advocacy as an organization. For over 100 years, national, state, and local support positions have informed every “action” taken by the League. The “study and action” process has earned LWV our reputation for fairness and thoroughness.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the League of Women Voters of Appleton set forth goals and an action plan to aid the League’s work for the journey toward a more diverse, equitable and inclusive organization.  The journey is recognized to include individual and organizational transformation to affect League members and the wider community. It is a journey which will require learning through the eyes of the oppressed, recognition of historical injustices and our part in it, facing the truth of oppression , and taking the initiative to break down systems of injustice.

Programs

The League hosts monthly issues-based programs that help inform and educate our members. Our program topics cover a wide range of topics and interests. Some past programs have focused on civil discourse, community engagement, minority businesses, murdered and missing indigenous women; the environment, health care finance, and election security. The Program Committee also assists with the work of the study group.

Events

Several standout League events bring members together to participate in and celebrate the League's work throughout the year. Team members pull together all the special features and details needed to coordinate the Annual Meeting in May, Summer Socials, Women's Equality Day in August, and the Holiday Brunch each December when the League presents its signature Making Democracy Work Award. This prestigious award celebrates local individuals who have envisioned a way to improve the Fox Cities community.  Creativity and meaningful details go into the creation of the Award.

Climate Resilience

The Climate Change Preparedness and Resilience Study Committee understands that the topic of Climate Resilience is vast, complex and evolving through new knowledge. While its two-year study is complete, the study members hope that the new Climate Resilience Committee can help carry forward many of the study's recommendations, continue further research, keep track of positive stories, and assist with League advocacy.

We hope to attract anyone interested and passionate about this topic, especially diverse people who hope to effect positive actions in our community.

Membership

Team members assist the Membership Director with recruitment and orientation of new members through one-on-one outreach and new member meetings. We endeavor to get to know new members’ interests and encourage participation in the many League activities, which aids in membership retention. We reach out to those whose memberships are lagging, and encourage their continued participation. These efforts help keep the League a lively, engaged organization.

Fundraising

We don’t just strengthen the League’s coffers. We collaborate with the Membership Team to build a growing and active membership base. We seek creative ways to support the League brand and generate awareness through fundraising campaigns and membership incentives.

Our donors and sponsors are the backbone of our League, and as such deserve recognition and appreciation for all they do. Good stewarding of these relationships keeps our League sustainable — and positioned to grow. We're generating ideas to cultivate new donors, and encourage existing ones to contribute at higher levels, which will help us develop future philanthropists to support our mission and goals.
